Saltford Stars 5 - 7 Shirehampton Colts

1st Round Cup Game
13th Sept 2009

Saltford spirit pushes Shirehampton all the way
The first game was a really close affair.  Shirehampton started the stronger and put Saltford under some early pressure, but Jamie Hamilton and Callum Messenger were strong at the back and let very little through.  Slowly the Saltford mid-field started to get the ball down and find a little space, and after 20 minutes Jon Satterley broke the stale-mate when he skipped past a defender on the left and fired a fierce low shot past the excellent Shire keeper.  The game started to open out in the second period with chances at either end, and George Dancey (Saltford man-of-the-match) made a string of fine saves topped off with a one-handed diving tip onto his crossbar.  Shire kept the pressure on though, and levelled following a mix-up at the back for Saltford that saw a deep cross/shot from Jake Jones find its way into the net.  Shire then took the initiative and went 1 up with a goal from Leevan Uhlyk.  Saltford though never let their heads drop, and Jack Muse pulled them back level after continually pressurising the Shire back line.  At this stage the game could have gone either way, but Saltford were caught out at the back by a late, far post Oliver Estcourt strike that finally decided the game in Shire's favour.

The second game was a totally different affair as Shire looked to wrap the tie up early on.  Some missed tackles from Saltford cost them as an excellent hat-trick in the first half from Jack Hooper swung the game totally Shire's way.  Saltford though refused to lie down, and slowly in the second half started to show what they were capable of.  It was Shire though that scored again, this time with a shot from Callum Gundry-White.  However, Saltford were unfazed and continued to push forward; eventually resulting in Hugo Brunsdon (Saltford man-of-the-match)smashing in a central free-kick - his first goal for the club.  He repeated the feat shortly afterwards with another blast right into the Shire top corner.  Suddenly Saltford started to believe in themselves and really started to put some pressure onto Shirehampton.  George Green was excellent on the Saltford right and eventually, following a great run, put the ball over for Jack Palmer to grab a third.

Congratulations to Shirehampton who took the tie by two goals, but well done to both sides for a entertaining fixture played in a really good spirit.  Also praise to Lewis George for a very fine game as referee.

Mangotsfield United  0 - 3  Saltford Stars

Stars shine for SaltfordSaltford Stars ensured a great end to their season with a hard fought but deserved victory over Mangotsfield.  Saltford dominated in the first game with the midfield of Jon Satterly, Ben Ferris-Pulsford and captain Luke Greenfield working well together.  Saltford constantly threatened but were kept at bay by a spirited and well organised Mangotsfield defense.  Ben Ferris-Pulsford finally broke the dead-lock with a powerful low shot into the corner after some concerted Saltford pressure.  Mangotsfield pressed for an equaliser but Callum Messenger's fine season at the back continued as he, Ellie Brockton and Max Perrett kept them out.  Ben doubled his tally when his corner was deflected in for Saltford making it 2-0.  Saltford pushed on but never quite found their passing form, and Mangotsfield made them work for everything.

With the first game finishing 2-0 the second game was always in the balance.  Saltford dominated again, this time with George Green working well on the left and Sam Speed organising from the midfield.  Jack Palmer netted from a tight angle after some good work through the middle to make it 1-0.  James Downes and Alex Quick worked hard down the flanks but were thwarted by some great saves from the Mangotsfield keeper.  Jamie Hamilton was superb for Saltford at the back, reading the play well and showing composure coming forwards; he, Nick Selman and Ben Smith all worked hard to keep Mangotsfield out.  Theo Cutmore also played well as was unlucky to see his curling free-kick just clear the top corner.

Saltford Stars 7 - 2 Frys

Saltford dominate in local derby.

With just 2 games left Saltford knew only a win would do as they took on Frys.  The first game started well with Saltford dominating possession with the whole mid-field playing as a unit.  George Green had a couple of early chances as he led the line well up front.  It was Jon Satterly who opened the scoring though when he picked up his own rebounded cross to wrong-foot the keeper.  It stayed 1-0 at the break although Saltford always threatened more.  In the second half Saltford put together a great passing display; first Jon Satterly added a second with a deflection through the keeper, then Harry Partridge scored from close in.  Harry was involved again as he superbly put Jon Satterly through for his hat-trick, and minutes later Jono returned the favour in a similar move for Harry to score again.  George Green deservedly picked up a strikers' goal from close range before Luke Greenfield, again dominant in the middle, finished the scoring with an excellent rising shot into the corner making it 7-0.  Callum Messenger, Ellie Brockton and Max Perrett worked well together to keep Fry's chances to a minimum whilst George Dancey pulled off a great finger-tip save part way through the half.  Ben F-P and Jon Satterly deserve a mention for the tireless work they put in down the flanks.

The second game started well with Theo Cutmore taking over where Luke Greenfield had left off in the first.  But Frys went 1-0 up with a mix-up at the back, and then 2-0 up after a mistake from James Downes in goal.  However, after this wake up call Saltford rarely looked back.  Jamie Hamilton, Nick Selman and Ben Smith made it hard for the Frys front men, and massive credit to James Downes who put his early mistake behind him and was simply outstanding from then on saving bravely on several occasions and sweeping up well.  It was the mid-field though of Theo Cutmore, Max Muggleton, Alex Quick and Sam Speed who bombarded the Frys defence in the second half; Sam especially having a good game.  Jack Palmer put in a big shift up front also and it seemed amazing come the end that it remained 0-2.  Good battling performance all round though, and some real character shown by Nick Selman and James; well done

Saltford Stars 6 - 2 Yate Rangers

Saltford turn on the style.

In the first game Saltford started brightly but resolute Yate defending kept it even.  Jack Muse was always a threat upfront, going close with two fine headers.  Michael Lee in goal for Yate was outstanding, pulling off some fine stops to keep it to 0-0 at the break.  Saltford started the second half brightly and found their form passing the ball around well.  Jon Satterly was a constant menace down the Saltford left and he broke the deadlock with a fine low drive.  Luke Greenfield dominated in the middle and distributed the ball well to his two wide men.  A deep corner resulting from more Saltford pressure was met sweetly by the head of Ben Ferris-Pulsford to double the advantage.  Saltford threatened to take control, but Yate's Kiernan Wynn always looked sharp and he kept Ellie Brockton and Ali Grant busy.  A fluent Saltford passing move, and dogged determination saw Jon Satterly get his second, with Jack Muse picking up a poacher's goal to make it 4-0.  Man-of-the-match for Saltford was Theo Cutmore who read the game well at the back to thwart Yate's attack.
In the second game Yate started very brightly and were unlucky not to be ahead early on.  Saltford slowly came back into it though, and the introduction of Callum Thomas's pace on the left gave them an outlet.  Saltford went 1 up after a cross from George Green was unfortunately turned their own net by Yate.  The game remained very even until a long ball from Callum Messenger found George Green up font who calmly slid it under the keeper to make it 2-0.  Yate to their credit never let their heads go down and Matthew Page finished well after a great run through the middle to keep Yate in it.  The second half was a battle from the start with chances for both sides.  Yate's attack kept Jamie Hamilton and Ben Smith busy, and it was Matthew Page again with a strong shot which levelled the second game.  But Saltford held on with Sam Speed and Harry Partridge turning in good battling performances to keep it to 2-2 at the end.  The Saltford man-of-the-match was George Dancey who made a some fine saves and controlled his defense well.

Broadwalk 0 Saltford Stars 10

Saltford scorch in the sun.

Saltford Stars u10's continued in their goal scoring form away to Broadwalk this week.  Saltford settled early with Ben Ferris-Pulsford, Jack Muse and captain Luke Greenfield all taking advantage from a couple of slips at the back from Broadwalk.  The home team then settled with Courtney Hazel pulling off some great saves to keep it close.  Saltford kept up the pressure though with Jack Muse completing his hat-trick before half-time.  Some good finishing in the second half put the game beyond Broadwalk's reach with two goals from Jon Satterley, two more from Luke Greenfield, and another for Ben Ferris-Pulsford.  To Broadwalk's credit they never gave up but solid work from the Saltford defense kept them out.  Max Perrett put in another solid tackling performance to earn man-of-the-match.

The second game was really even.  James Downes pulled off two excellent early saves in the first half to keep Broadwalk out, with Sam Speed and Jack Palmer both hitting the bar for Saltford.  Saltford pressured but just couldn't get through a spirited Broadwalk defense.  Brave keeping from Kieran Griffin in the second half ensured a clean sheet for Broadwalk, despite tireless effort from Callum Thomas, Theo Cutmore and George Green.  Up front Calum Arnel was always a threat for Broadwalk, but good work again from the Saltford defense restricted his chances.  James Downes was the Saltford man-of-the-match with a solid display to ensure Saltford's first overall clean sheet of the season.

Saltford Stars 11 Ashton Boys 2

Saltford Stars u10's rediscover winning form.

In the first game Saltford produced some excellent passing football, which has been absent for a few games, to emphatically see off a very plucky Ashton Boys B side. Saltford hit early through Ben Ferris-Pulsford in under a minute, and Jon Satterley soon followed up with a second.  Ashton fought back though, and pulled one back through Nick Burchill after forcing a fine save from George Dancy in goal.  Saltford though ploughed forwards and re-took command of the game through a Theo Cutmore strike.  Jack Muse was next to score after some great work on both flanks, and he followed it up with a second with what's becoming a trade-mark Muse header.  Luke Greenfield registered with a left foot drive as he dominated in the midfield.  The second half was one-way traffic with Jack Muse registering another 3 goals and Jon Sattereley scoring his second with a swerving strike.  Jack Marsh in the Ashton goal played well and kept it to 10-1 at the final whistle; Luke Greenfield was the Saltford man-of-the-match, with a deserved mention for Theo Cutmore debuting in defense.

The second game was much tighter with both teams exchanging chances early on.  The passing never quite came up to the standard they are capable of but Sam Speed organised well, and drove them on from centre mid-field.  Good work down the right side from Jamie Hamilton led to Jack Palmer netting with a low shot, despite a valiant effort from the Ashton keeper.  The second half followed the trend of the first with chances at both ends.  Callum Thomas played well on his debut in goal, but just couldn't reach a shot from Jay Fowler after he was put through from the mid-field.  There was a late chance on his left foot from James Downes which was excellently blocked by the defense, and the game finished deservedly 1-1.  Saltford man-of-the-match was Ben Smith who was a rock in defense.
